The Beginner’s Guide To Racing
Want to enjoy the racing festivities, without sounding like a complete novice? We’ll ensure you’re a little better informed with some simple equine terminology...
- Hand: The unit of measurement of a horse
- Progeny: Offspring by a certain stallion or from a certain mare
- Sire: The father of a horse
- Quinella: A bet in which you have to correctly select the first two horses in a race in any order
- Trifecta:A bet in which the first three finishers must be picked in the correct order
- A bet each way: Like placing two bets on the same horse, i.e. a $5 each-way bet would cost $10. The first $5 is a win bet, and will pay out if the horse comes first. The second $5 is a place bet, so will pay out if the horse secures a place in the race

Fashions On The Field
Spring Racing means 50 days of frocks, suits and hats – in an environment where Fashions On The Field can be as hotly contested as the racing itself. This season, make sure you look the part with these simple dress-code tips:
- Acknowledge racing etiquette (don’t under-dress, avoid too much bling etc)
- Feminine florals are in
- Go for beautiful, classic outfits – not too short, and not too long
- The Boho-chic look is perfect for a younger race-goer. For the not-so-youthful, pleats and frills are the ideal feminine touch
- Go with tradition – wear Black and white for Derby Day, plenty of colour on Cup Day, and more floaty fabrics on Oaks Day<
- Hats get the big tick this year – match with gorgeous shoes & clutch to complement your outfit

Make Sure Your Spring Racing Outfit Is A Winner – From Top To Bottom
You’ve invested in a gorgeous dress, and some don’t-mention-the-price shoes. Make sure you compliment your outfit with the right under-garments, to ensure the best possible look on the day. Here are some tips from the style gurus at Elle Macpherson Intimates:
- Get a professional bra fitting; a bra that’s too big or small can ruin your look instantly
- For dresses with fine or sheer straps, wear a strapless bra
- A pretty bra strap can be shown off with the right outfit. A hint of beautiful lace can be alluring – but only a hint!
- Wear dark, nude or pale pink underwear under dark colours, and nude or pale pink under light colours
- Pink is a pretty substitute for flesh-coloured undergarments
- Shorts & Boylegs are great for concealing the panty line, without unnecessary discomfort
